St. Giles’ – Strategic Plan
For many years the PCC has discussed possible improvements to the church building and furnishings. In August 2018 we published a Feasibility Study for some of the ideas we had discussed.
In 2019 the City Churches Grants Committee awarded us a grant for 50% of the estimated costs for Phase1 which included –
Despite covid-19 the new lighting system was installed in 2020 and completed, with two extra chancel spotlights and improvements to the Grand Organ console lighting, in March 2021.
In February 2021 we took delivery of the new furniture. We had chosen St. Mary benches and armchairs from Treske Furniture.
Thank-you to all who have helped pay for the new furniture with donations to our Furniture Appeal. The Appeal has not yet closed so follow the instructions below if you would like to contribute.
A dedication plaque on the bench or chair will record your gift.
If you would like to commemorate a significant event, a birth, a marriage, the death of a loved one or to join with us in caring for the church in the heart of the Barbican, please make a donation. £1,000 will provide a bench and £500 a chair. All donations gratefully received.

When the church was restored after WW2 the nave floor was laid using pre-used pine floorboards. Over the passage of sixty years the supporting timbers deteriorated, and the floorboards were a little lower than the surrounding Purbeck marble aisles. Some of the boards moved when we stood or knelt on them and they creaked disturbingly.
In January 2021 the old pine floorboards were removed. The supporting timbers were repaired, packers were fitted to lift the finished floor flush with the aisles and additional timbers fitted to provide proper support. The new floor is made from oak to match the new furniture.
When scaffolding towers were erected to fit new lights the opportunity was taken to clean the walls. In March 2021 the damage to the south wall and the north-west corner from water ingress was repaired. Phase 1 of the Strategic Plan was complete.
