St. Giles’ – Strategic Plan

For many years the PCC has discussed possible improvements to the church building and furnishings. In August 2018 we published a Feasibility Study for some of the ideas we had discussed.

In 2019 the City Churches Grants Committee awarded us a grant for 50% of the estimated costs to –

  • Install a new lighting system
  • Replace the existing dilapidated pews with new furniture
  • Repair the Nave Floor
  • Clean the walls and repair the damage from water ingress

Despite covid-19 the new lighting system was installed in 2020. Only two chancel spotlights and improvements to the Grand Organ lighting remain to be done.

New Furniture for                             St Giles' Appeal

Our pews came from St Luke’s Old Street and over the years they have become increasingly rickety. The time has come for us to provide new furniture for our beautiful church.

We have chosen stackable benches

and matching chairs with arms for those who need more support.

A dedication plaque on the bench or chair will record your gift.

We do hope that you are able to support this appeal.  Thank you

If you would like to commemorate a significant event, a birth, a marriage, the death of a loved one or to join with us in caring for the church in the heart of the Barbican, please make a donation. £1,000 will provide a bench and £500 a chair. All donations gratefully received.

For more information download the following document. It should accompany donations by bank transfer or cheque and includes the text for a dedication plaque.

In December 2020 one hundred and sixty Howe 40/4 stackable chairs were delivered and the old furniture removed. The stackable chairs will be used for the Christmas services.

The Treske St. Mary Benches and Chairs, described above, will be delivered in the w/b 25th. January 2021 and the Chancel furniture is expected before Easter.

Nave Floor

When the church was restored after WW2 the nave floor was laid using pre-used pine floorboards. Over the past sixty years the supporting timbers have deteriorated, and the floorboards are a little lower than the surrounding Purbeck marble aisles. Some of the boards move when we stand or kneel and they creak disturbingly.

In January 2021 the old pine floorboards will be removed. The supporting timbers will be repaired, packers fitted to lift the finished floor flush with the aisles and additional timbers fitted to provide proper support. The new floor will be made from oak to match the new furniture.

Latest update 18 January

Work continues on the new floor and is due to be completed weekending 22 January.

  Walls

When scaffolding towers were erected to fit new lights the opportunity was taken to clean the walls. Only the unsightly water damage in the north-west corner requires further attention and this should be achieved during 2021.
